1831 Reform Bill Riot Map

The map below shows locations of reform-related riots and disturbances in the immediate aftermath of the defeat of the Second Reform Bill (October-November 1831). A riot (marked in red, amber or green) in this case is defined as an incidence of serious collective violence, often over several days and involving significant damage to property and the intervention of Yeomanry or Military units. Disturbances (marked in black) are lesser events, typically lasting a few hours at most, with minor property damage and no intervention by the Yeomanry or Military. Some of the riots have detailed micro-historical case studies or are covered in articles on this website; pending case studies will be available on this website at a later date; and, points of interest, which while relevant to the current study, are not planned to be included as case studies.
