A free talk and exhibition at Bristol Museums, M Shed. At this talk the Team will try to answer the following questions about the 1831 Bristol Riots:
- Why did Bristol riot and why did it ‘get out of hand’?
- Why did the authorities find it so difficult to control and disperse the crowd?
- How did the rioters organise themselves?
- What can the targets of the rioters tell us about their conception of society?
- Why were labouring class men and women rioting in support of a Reform Bill that was never likely to enfranchise them?
