In October 1831 a wave of disturbances swept across England after the rejection of the Second Reform Bill in the House of Lords. This wave culminated in Bristol with the most serious riot in nineteenth century Britain but civil disturbances also broke out in a number of other West Country towns, including Sherborne and Yeovil. In this talk, Dr. Roger Ball will talk about the University of the West of England’s Riot 1831 project, which seeks to better understand the causes and context of the riots through a programme of community engagement activities.
